FOREWORD

            Land utilisation pattern is the basic information  needed for studying and managing agriculture. The Directorate of Economics & Statistics in the Ministry of Agriculture have been collecting data on the nine-fold classification of land, irrigated area source-wise and crop-wise and area under crops, from the individual  States for each of the districts in the country. The State-wise summary of the above land use details was brought out in the form a publication entitled “Land Use Statistics At a Glance”  for the first time in  the year 2000 giving data relating to the years 1995-96 and 1996-97.  The present publication  is the second in the series  containing updated data for the year  1996-97 and recent most available data for 1997-98.

             I hope this publication would serve as a reference for all those concerned with agriculture in the country.
