DROUGHT SITUATION
REPORT – 20th June, 2003
Rainfall: So far, the
Arabian Sea ‘arm’ of south-west monsoon has advanced upto Madhya Maharashtra
and Konkan met sub-divisions of Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat.
The coverage of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka by this arm is, however,
very scanty. Coverage of Gujarat
and Maharashtra is extensive. The
Bay of Bengal ‘arm’ which was
stagnant last week has advanced to Gangetic West Bengal, parts of Orissa and
Jharkhand. On the whole, the progress of both ‘arms’ has been very
satisfactory during the week – situation in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh needs
to be watched – it should be clearer by the next week.
According to the overall assessment of the IMD, the rainfall “surge”
of the two arms is not yet fully developed.
While for the period ending 11th June, 2003, area waited
rainfall for the country as a whole was (–)39%, the figures for the period
ending 18th June, 2003 are (-)22% - during the week 11th
to 11th June, 2003, rainfall was adequate thanks mainly to the pre-monsoon
showers.
Pre-monsoon rains in West Rajasthan have benefitted most of the severely
affected districts in that region
except Jaisalmer. Monsoon rains in
Orissa have also brought relief to the severely affected districts in that
State.
Crop position:
With the onset of Monsoon, sowing has commenced in certain areas although
these operations are at an initial stage. The
