DROUGHT SITUATION  REPORT – 13th June, 2003

Rainfall:                  South-west monsoon which set in the north-east on 4th June, 2003 and Kerala coast on 8th June, 2003 had covered coastal Karnataka, Goa and parts of Tamil Nadu by 12th June, 2003.  The progress of advance is slow.  Konkan and parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and Orissa have been receiving pre-monsoon rains.

Crop position:          With the onset of Monsoon, sowing has commenced in certain areas although these operations are at an initial stage.  The highlights of preliminary figures may be given as under:-

-                      Area coverage under rice is 7.82 lakh ha. as compared to corresponding figure of 8.54 lakh ha. last year.

-                      Area coverage of Coarse Cereal 4.39 lakh ha. as compared to 4.39 lakh ha. last year.

-                      Sowing of sugarcane satisfactory except in Tamil Nadu where it is lagging behind by 0.5 lakh ha.

-                      Sowing of cotton 8.98 lakh ha.  As against 9.21 lakh ha. for corresponding period last year.

-                      Sowing of Oilseeds has commenced.

-                      The shortfall in area coverage this year vis-a-vis last year is indicative of the cautious approach of farmers this year.
