Additional Information

Maize is the 3rd important Cereal in the World.  It is the most important crop indigenous to United States of America, where around 25% of Crop land area is occupied by maize. India is at 6th position in maize production and 15th position in its productivity in the World. The maize is cultivated mainly for food, fodder, feed and industrial uses. It is staple food for tribals and poors in the country.  More than 3,500 products of daily application are derived from it.   It is the crop of future as mentioned by the father of the Green Revolution, renowned Nobel laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug.  There is an urgent need to promote maize on priority basis by implementing maize development programme on Mission Mode Approach.  Recently Hon’ble Agriculture Minister has approved inclusion of new Technology Mission on Maize in the 10th Plan.  The crop has highest yield potential among the cereals.  Maize can play vital role in ensuring Food Security as well as Nutritional Security (by use of Quality Protein Maize (QPM) for the Country and World as a whole.
