Production Achievement of Oilseeds : 

Consequent to the setting up of Technology Mission on Oilseeds  a major breakthrough in increasing oilseed production was achieved through an integrated approach by introducing new crop technologies, better supply of inputs and extension services support for marketing and post harvest technologies and excellent coordination/co-operation between various organizations/departments and Ministries.  As a result of concerted efforts by the TMO, the production of oilseeds has increased from 10.83  million tonnes in 1985-86 to 24.75 million tonnes in 1998-99. This was brought about not only by increase in area but also by improving the productivity from 569 Kg. to 944 Kg. per hectare.   However, due to drought conditions in the major oilseeds producing States during the period 1999-2000 to 2002-03,  the production of oilseeds had declined marginally. However, the downward trend in oilseeds production has been reversed in the year 2003-04 by achieving a production of 25.14 million tonnes against the target of 24.70 million tonnes, due to favourable weather conditions and support by the Govt. under developmental programmes and policies.
